Immersed Refinement Mesh Control

Introduction

This option helps to achieve the local mesh refinement around immersed finite element (FE) surfaces within the fluid domain. This will generate a finer volume mesh around the immersed faces based on the specified mesh parameters. One of the major applications of this mesh control is the Immersed Wall feature in Flow solution which requires a finer volume mesh around the surface.

Average element size

This option defines the element size of the tetrahedral (Tet) mesh generated within the fluid volume, particularly near the immersed surfaces. The edge lengths of the generated elements will fall within a range based on the specified Average Element Size (AES).

Edge Length Range:

From AES / √2 to AES × √2

Number of tet layers

This option defines the minimum number of Tet layers that must be generated inside the fluid domain starting from the immersed surface. It ensures adequate resolution near immersed or embedded geometry.

Usage Notes

  1. Apply Immersed Mesh Control:

First, apply the Immersed Mesh Control to the immersed surfaces within the fluid volume. This defines the mesh refinement behaviour around the immersed surfaces.

  2. Generate the Mesh with Tet Option:

Next, navigate to: Mesh >3D Mesh >Tet.

Select the fluid body, then turn ON the Immersed Mesh option from Mesh >3D Mesh >Tet – Advanced to generate the mesh.

  3. This option is only supported for FE input.
