Introduction of Parasitics Extraction
Introduction
Parasitics Extraction solution is the SimLab solution to model non-ideal behaviors of electrical interconnects and to take them into account in system-level simulations of power electronics converters.
In fact, the electromagnetic behavior of the metallic conductors having the role to link electronic components is not an ideal short-circuit, but – when current is flowing – a voltage drop exists between two different points of the interconnection. These phenomena are usually referred to as “parasitics effects” and can be represented by means of equivalent impedances or admittances, as well as by S-parameter matrices.
The Parasitic Extraction solution provides the user the ability to compute, for a given set of 3D conductor, dielectric and linear soft magnetic volumes, the frequency-dependent S-parameter matrices or impedances representing the equivalent behavior seen from a selected set of input/output ports. As these ports correspond to physical pins where electric and electronic components are connected, the obtained S-matrices can be imported (Touchstone format) into circuit solvers and integrated in transient system-level simulations for accurate predictions of power converter performances.
For some solving configurations this solution is also able to create a SPICE-compatible file that can be used if the circuit solver is not able to read S-parameter Touchstone format. Moreover, the capability to plot S-parameters as a function of the frequency is available to enable the user to analyse the contributions of the so-called resistive, inductive and capacitive effects to the whole parasitic behavior of the simulated interconnects.
The self and mutual impedances can also be plot as function of the frequency. The Touchstone and SPICE exports are not possible for impedances.
In addition to self and mutual impedances, the values of resistances, inductances and capacitances can be plot as function of the frequency, to do so, an option should be enabled in the Result Request.
PE Workflow
All functions are available in the different ribbon bars Geometry, Mesh, Analysis, ...
The content of each ribbon is adapted depending on the active solution.
Main Limitations of the Parasitics Extraction Solution
- Not available for Linux platforms (only for Windows).
- Conductive, dielectric and linear soft magnetic materials are accepted. The non-linear soft magnetic and the permanent magnets are not supported.
- Mesh limitations:
- Pyramid mesh type is not supported for this version.
- 2nd order mesh is currently not allowed.
