Classify parts
Each module within a battery pack requires the components to be labeled for processing and labeling purposes. The panel is shown below:
Each body in the electrical part of the model is selected and assigned as follows;
- Battery Cell: This denotes the core of a detailed battery cell, with varying degrees of detail possible, or the battery itself for a homogenized cell with no detailed cell componentry.
- Tab Positive: This represents the positive terminal or tab connected to the current collector. It can be depicted by either a solid volume connected to the jellyroll of the cell or a surface between a busbar and the cell.
- Tab Negative: This denotes the negative terminal or tab connected to the current collector. Similar to the positive tab, it can be depicted by either a solid volume connected to the jellyroll of the cell or a surface between a busbar and the cell.
- Busbar: These are the metal connectors linking cells together to carry current.
- Other Electrical Components: Components that conduct electricity, that are not busbars or tabs
- Cell Naming Order: Assigns labels to battery modules within a pack using the standard mSnP convention. Additionally, each module in the pack is identified similarly. For instance, in a battery pack with two modules, the location of the battery in the second parallel and serial position would be: M2S2P2.
The current collector of a battery is explicitly modeled only in the MSMD approach. In the single potential model, the jellyroll is a homogenized region representing the anode, cathode, separator, and current collector. The tab connects to this homogenized region in this modeling approach. Some examples cell structures are shown below.
The geometry can also include the intricate details of the cell such as the current interrupt device (CID). A mock-up of such a geometry could be:
In this case, the components would be defined as:
- The “+tab” would be classified as a “Positive tab”.
- CID bottom disk, CID top disk, and Terminal would be classified as “busbar”.
- The Jellyroll would be set to “Battery cell”.
