Get Started with EDEM
The EDEM user interface comprises three icons for each simulation component - Creator, Simulator, and Analyst.
EDEM Creator
EDEM Creator is the pre-processor for creating an EDEM simulation model, including setting up equipment and defining the generation of bulk materials.

EDEM Simulator is a powerful solver used for fast and efficient simulations.
EDEM Analyst
EDEM Analyst is the post-processor used to analyze and visualize the results of your simulation.
- Analyst Tree-Display
  Analyst Tree-Display allows you to configure the display of your model in the Viewer. You can visualize Cylindrical Periodic Boundary conditions from the Geometries section.
- Analyst Tree-Setup Selections
  Analyst Tree-Selections allows you to extract data from a particular area or element in the domain.
  - Add a Selections Sub-section
    Selections work after you have configured the Display Selections.
  - Add a Sensor Selections Sub-section
    EDEM allows you to add a Sensor Selections sub-section to the simulation that can return aggregate information about the selected regions.
  - Define Setup Selections - Queries
    A query is used to define a single element attribute, for example, particle velocity, total force on a geometry section or number of collisions. The query information can then be displayed in the Viewer and in the Groups section in the Data Browser. Bin cells can also be colored according to the results of the query.
  - Retain Selections over Time
    You can retain selections for any particle passing through the selection group so that they remain selected once they have exited the Selection Group. If you use Manual Selection, the selected particles or Geometries remain selected over time. If you use other selection options such as Grid Bin Group, Geometry Bin, and so on, the particles or Geometries are only selected by default if the center of the particle or Geometry is inside the Bin Group.
- Analyst Tree-Tools
  Analyst Tree-Tools comprises the Ruler, Protractor, and Domain Grid.
- Analyst Tree-Clipping
  Analyst Tree-Clipping allows you to remove or clip areas of the model that are currently not of interest.
- Analyst Tree-Field
  Analyst Tree-Field allows you to define the way fields are displayed.
- Review Your Simulation
  EDEM Analyst allows you to review and examine your simulation.
- Export Data
  You can export the data collected during your simulation for analysis using queries. Data can be exported from a single Time Step, a range of Time Steps, from all elements in your model, or from a selection or bin group.
- Continuum Analysis
  Continuum Analysis allows you to view and analyze your simulation data as a Continuum instead of discrete particles.
- Perform Spray Coating Analysis
  The EDEM spray coating post-processing tools use a ray tracing approach that offer key advantages over the legacy Spray Coating model.
- Graphs
  EDEM Analyst allows you to plot the data collected during your simulation using a number of charts.

Define Setup Selections - Queries

A query is used to define a single element attribute, for example, particle velocity, total force on a geometry section or number of collisions. The query information can then be displayed in the Viewer and in the Groups section in the Data Browser. Bin cells can also be colored according to the results of the query.

To define queries:

Click Edit in the Options section.
The Selection Query Editor is displayed.
Select an element and attribute from the list.
The elements are categorized by type Contacts, Geometry, and Particles.
Select a Section (for Geometry elements) or Type of element for which the information will be displayed.
For example, an attribute relating to particles of type A, a particular section of Geometry, or a Contact between two specific particle types.
Select a Query Type to determine the type of data displayed. Options are: Average, Maximum, Minimum, or Total.
For certain element attributes, only the average velocity or the maximum force, this option is available.
Select a Component for the attribute you. Options are: Magnitude, X, Y, or Z.
For certain element attributes, only the X component of the particle velocity or the magnitude of the normal force in a surface-surface contact is available.
Select the Specify Range checkbox to constrain the data collected to a particular value range and specify the range of particle velocities (between 1m/s and 10m/s, for example).
Click Add after defining the query.
1. Optionally, you can also create and add multiple queries to the list.
  All queries are automatically added to a table in the Selections page in the Data browser.
