Residence Time in Geometries Models
The Residence Time in Geometries contact models allow you to track the total time spent by specific particle types inside the boundaries of one or more predefined geometries: a sphere, a box (cuboid), or cylinder.

You must first add the Residence Time in Geometries model to the Physics of a specific EDEM simulation and then modify as required in order to be used.

Get Started with EDEM
The EDEM user interface comprises three icons for each simulation component - Creator, Simulator, and Analyst.

EDEM Creator is the pre-processor for creating an EDEM simulation model, including setting up equipment and defining the generation of bulk materials.

EDEM Simulator is a powerful solver used for fast and efficient simulations.

EDEM Contact Models
A Contact Model describes how elements behave when they come into contact with each other.
- Base Contact Models
  Base Contact models define the physical collision between particle materials or particles and geometries.
- Rolling Friction Contact Models
  Rolling Friction is the resistive force that slows down the motion of a rolling object.
- Spinning Friction Contact Model
  The Spinning Friction contact model is used to account for the friction that would occur if a particle face is rotating against another particle or Geometry.
- Additional Contact Models
  You can also add Additional contact models to a simulation.
- Particle Body Force Contact Models
  You can define a particle body force to act on particles when a specified condition is met, when particles are in certain positions, or are traveling at a specified velocity.
- Plug-in Contact Models
  You can add Plug-in contact models to a simulation.
  - Linear Elastic Bonding Model (LEBM)
    The Linear Elastic Bonding contact model (LEBM) consists of elastic bonds, providing a different type of behavior than the Bonding and Bonding V2 models.
  - Residence Time in Geometries Models
    The Residence Time in Geometries contact models allow you to track the total time spent by specific particle types inside the boundaries of one or more predefined geometries: a sphere, a box (cuboid), or cylinder.
    - Calculate the Custom Residence Time Property
      For particles that meet the following criteria, the Custom Residence Time property associated with these three plug-ins adds the value of the current Time Step (in seconds) to the property.
    - Use the Residence Time in Geometries Models
      You must first add the Residence Time in Geometries model to the Physics of a specific EDEM simulation and then modify as required in order to be used.
    - Post Processing
      After a simulation has run with one of the three Residence Time in Geometries models enabled, EDEM Analyst displays the new property.
  - Hydrodynamic Lubrication Model
    The Hydrodynamic Lubrication contact model simulates the effect of short-range hydrodynamic forces on particles as though they were saturated in a fluid.
- Field Data Manager
  Field Data Manager allows you to import and manage field data for use in a Custom model (typically, a Particle Body Force).
- Contact Model and GPU Device Compatibility
  The Multi-Sphere solver can run on two different engines such as CPU and CUDA.
EDEM Cal Utility
EDEM Cal is a utility which works with EDEM and is designed to assist in performing calibration.

Use the Residence Time in Geometries Models

You must first add the Residence Time in Geometries model to the Physics of a specific EDEM simulation and then modify as required in order to be used.

To use the Residence Time in Geometries models:

After selecting the plug-in and then clicking the icon in the lower-right section of the Physics section to configure it, the parameters displayed in the dialog box will depend on the plug-in being used.
In this example, the Residence Time in Sphere plug-in is used, but the corresponding Box and Cylinder plug-ins look similar, only with different Geometry properties.
Click the icon to view a list of all the particles in the simulation.
Select the particle types for which you want to track the Custom Residence Time property.
After specifying the particle type, specify the properties for the Geometry.
Click OK.
The property values are stored within the EDEM simulation and can be recovered and modified at any time during the simulation by clicking the icon and repeating the same steps.
