Create Volume Mesh

Use the Volume tool to run a surface + volume mesh on the entire model.

The operation sequence for a surface + volume mesh is as follows: Surface mesh → surface mesh validity check → volume mesh.

Surface mesh validity checks for any intersections/unmeshed surfaces. If the surface mesh validity check fails, the operation sequence is terminated and you are shown the failed surfaces.

Note: Any existing surface mesh is retained. Only unmeshed surfaces are meshed.
  1. From the Mesh ribbon, click the Volume tool.
    Figure 1.

    The Meshing Operations dialog opens.
  2. Define the mesh size.
The size defined here is the global size and will be assigned to all surfaces and volumes without user-defined mesh controls. If local meshing controls are assigned using the Mesh Controls tools, they will override the default settings defined here.
  3. Optional: Activate the Generate boundary layer on fluid domains only option.
Use this option to generate boundary layer elements on fluid volumes only. This is very useful for conjugate heat transfer cases where fluid and solid domains share surfaces and you only want to grow the BL inside the fluid domains.
  4. Define any advanced meshing parameters.
  5. Click Mesh.
    The Run Status dialog opens.

Once the run is complete, the status icons turns to a green check mark and surface mesh is generated on the model.

  6. Optional: Right-click on a job and select View log file to track the meshing process.
Tip: Select surfaces and find those that are unmeshed by right-clicking in the modeling window and selecting Select > Advanced Select > Unmeshed Surfaces.
