Using the Auto-Define Trap Feature
The auto-define trap feature enables you to select a sample line and then have Monarch Classic automatically define traps to extract the data from lines that have the same structure as the sample line.
There are several things to keep in mind when using the auto-define trap feature:
-
When selecting your sample line (step 1 below), try to select a line that represents the structure of the majority of the lines in the report. Since Monarch Classic will automatically create traps based upon the sample line you select, you should try to select a line which best represents the data you want to trap.
-
It's important that you inspect multiple pages of your report, both when selecting your sample line, as well as when inspecting the trapping results after activating the auto-define trap feature (step 4 below). If you only inspect one page, you may not select the best sample line or, after you've utilized the auto-define trap, you may overlook lines which weren't trapped properly on other pages.
-
Once you have activated the auto-define trap feature, when viewing the results, any lines that are left unselected (i.e., that are left unchecked) will not be trapped. If a line's check box isn't selected and you want that line to be trapped, make sure you select its check box, then click the Apply Changes button.
-
Carefully examine the report to find the line that best represents the data you want to trap (e.g., that contains all of the fields you want to trap), then click in the line selection area to select it.
-
On the Report Design ribbon select New Template, and then a template role.
-
Click the Auto-Define Trap on the Report Design ribbon. The Auto Define Trap window displays.
-
Carefully inspect the results to make sure that all the lines you want to trap have been selected.
Note: Be sure to inspect multiple report pages, if not all of them.) Selected lines are highlighted in gray and their adjacent Target check boxes are selected. Lines which weren't trapped lack the gray highlight and their adjacent Target boxes aren't selected.
-
If there are any lines that you want trapped but which weren't selected, select their Target check boxes. If the text of any of these lines turns red, click the Apply Changes button to have Monarch Classic recalculate the auto-trapping process so that they will now be included (i.e., will be successfully trapped).
-
When all the lines you want to trap have been selected, click the Accept button. Monarch Classic closes the window and displays the trap results in the Report Design window.
-
Scroll down through the report to be sure that all the lines you want to trap are highlighted.
-
You can now define the fields you want to extract.
Note: You can try using the auto-define fields feature to assist you with this. To do so, simply click the Auto-Define Fields button on the Report Design ribbon.
