Navigating a Report Index
Monarch Classic provides two modes of navigation within the Report Index, passive navigation and active navigation.
Passive navigation involves expanding or collapsing branches to view underlying items without updating the Report view display. To expand a branch, click on the hollow triangle () to the left of the branch. To collapse a branch, click on the sold triangle () to the left of the branch.
Active navigation involves highlighting a branch in the tree. Whenever a branch is highlighted, the Report view is automatically updated to display the corresponding page in the report. Using active navigation, branches are expanded or collapsed by double-clicking or by using the left or right keyboard arrows.
Active navigation is slightly slower than passive navigation, since you are constantly updating the Report view display. Typically, you will use a combination of passive and active navigation in Tree view, e.g., click on the plus sign to the left of a branch to expand it (passive navigation), then, when you have found an item of interest to you, click the item to display the corresponding page of the report (active navigation).
Using the keyboard to navigate
When you use the keyboard to explore the tree, only active navigation is possible. Highlighting each branch is an inherent part of keyboard navigation, because the highlight acts as a cursor to provide positional feedback. Since the rule for scrolling the report is, "Whenever a branch in the tree is highlighted, update the Report view to display the corresponding page", there is no way to avoid active navigation when navigating with the keyboard.

Using the mouse to navigate
Using the mouse, either active or passive navigation may be employed. Passive navigation is faster since the Report view does not need to be constantly updated.
Typically, the mouse is used to perform a combination of passive and active navigation. Passive navigation is used to quickly get to an item of interest and then active navigation is used to highlight the item and thereby update the Report view.
