Malware Scanning

Altair Drive automatically scans uploaded files for security threats and restricts access until scanning completes. It uses Microsoft Defender to scan every file immediately after upload. This feature is available on Microsoft Azure.

How File Scanning Works

Scanning starts as soon as the upload finishes. A scanning icon appears next to the file with a message, Scanning for threats.

You cannot select the file while scanning is in progress, and Altair Drive disables right-click and action ribbon menu options until scanning completes.

If Microsoft Defender finds no threats

  • Altair Drive replaces the scanning icon with the standard file icon.
  • The fille is safe and ready to use.

When a File Is Malicious

If Microsoft Defender flags a file as malicious:
  • Altair Drive displays a warning icon next to the file.
  • When you hover over or select the icon, it shows a message: Threat detected in <filename>. File access has been restricted.
  • When you select the file, it displays only the Delete option in the action ribbon menu.
  • When you delete a malicious file. The following message displayed: This file is flagged as malicious and cannot be accessed. Deleting it will permanently remove it from Drive.

Delete Multiple Files (Malicious and Safe)

If you select multiple files and at least one file is malicious:
  • It shows only the Delete option in the context menu and action ribbon menu.
  • When your selection includes both malicious and safe files, it displays the following message: Malicious files will be permanently deleted. Safe files will go to Trash.

Deleting Malicious Files

Altair Drive permanently deletes malicious files to remove security risks.
  • It shows only the Delete option in the context menu and action ribbon menu.

Delete Malicious and Versioned Files

When your selection includes malicious, safe, and versioned files:
  • It shows only the Delete option in the context menu and action ribbon menu.
  • A confirmation message is displayed: Malicious and versioned files will be permanently deleted. Safe files will go to Trash.
